Composing foreign language emails

For anyone that needs to compose an email in a foreign language, Gmail can help you. If you don't have a Gmail account, it can be useful as a backup email client and is also needed if you get an Android phone or tablet.

The steps are as follows:-

1) Log into your Gmail account
2) Click the gear wheel to get to the Settings
3) Click on 'Show all language options' if it's there
3) Tick the box to 'Enable input tools'
4) Click on 'Edit tools'
5) Two lists of languages will appear. Choose one on the left ('All input tools') that you want to use then click on the right-facing arrow between the two lists to put this language into your own 'Selected input tools'.
6) Repeat this for as many languages that you are likely to use, then click OK.
7) Scroll down to the bottom of the Settings and Save Changes

A keyboard icon will now have appeared next to the gear wheel in your account.
When composing an email, click on the keyboard and choose your language.

Useful file copying tip (Windows Vista and Win7 only)

In case the above link ever becomes defunct, the tip is to hold down Shift while right-clicking on a file - an extra option appears 'Copy as Path'

When you use the Copy as Path option, the information copied to the clipboard includes not only the name of the file but the folder path where it can be found. This can save you time if the next procedure you are trying to complete has a dialog box, which asks you to find the file in your folder hierarchy before it performs its function.

Annoying problems solved

Problems solved at last! Had problems viewing competition pages on FB, also kept getting an empty basket on Amazon when using Windows 7 and IE9. Problem solved by removing Facebook amd Amazon from the trusted sites list!!!

Now I don't have to go to an older XP machine to carry out these tasks!

Don't we just hate Captchas*? Try using your browser's zoom facility to be able to read them better.

In Internet Explorer you can use Ctrl and + to enlarge, then use Ctrl and - to reduce the size back (or use Ctrl and 0 (that's a zero).

Humax Foxsat HDR and Apple Mac (Highly technical)

Finally, a solution to accessing the Humax from OSX Lion. i.e. SMB sharing.

Quote "My experience is that Lion has upgraded the smb protocol stack and is
using a more secure authentication procedure."

Apple's fine engineers gave instructions on how to return Lion's smb
security protocol back down to Snow Leopard's level. They suggested using the
following command that needs to be run in a terminal window everytime Lion
boots:-

 sudo sysctl -w net.smb.fs.kern_deprecatePreXPServers=0

To restore the smb protocol stack back to Lion's original state either reboot
or run the following command in a terminal window:-

 sudo sysctl -w net.smb.fs.kern_deprecatePreXPServers=1

Hopefully this will fix it it, if not, (and System Restore doesn't work - a last resort), you have to create a new user with administrator rights and then delete your old user (but it's a while since I had to do that).
